Kolkata, 09 August: IN a bid to curb the menace of unauthorised motorbike racing and stunts on the streets, state transport department has hiked the amount of fine for this by 50 times.

State transport minister Subhenu Adhikari today announced in the state Assembly that now on, anyone found racing or doing stunts with motorbikes on the roads would have to pay a fine of Rs 5,000, instead of the previous Rs 100.

The amount of fine has been hiked after police pointed out to the government that the meagre fine was hardly a deterrent to youths who often take to bike racing in Kolkata and other urban areas in the state late in the evening, the minister said.

The transport department has already issued a gazette notification mentioning the change and the same was being sent to all police stations in the state.

Youths in Kolkata often take to unauthorised motorbike racing and stunts on the main roads at areas like Khiderpore, New Alipore, AJC Bose Road Flyover, Park Circus, Kamalgaji Flyover, Rajabazar, etc. leading to fatal accidents.

In view of back to back fatal mishaps, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had in last year July ordered a ban on motorbikes ply through all flyovers in the city from 10 pm to dawn.
