Kolkata, 05 November: SMUGGLING of gold through Kolkata airport is showing no sign of decline despite repeated seizures being made by the Customs officials.
This morning, officials of the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Customs department intercepted a 33-year old Manish Ashoklal Wadhaw, after he landed at Kolkata airport from Bangkok by a SpiceJet flight around 6.25 am this morning.
AIU officials had specific tipoff that Wadhaw who hails from Ullhasnagar, Thane in Maharashtra, had smuggled in gold. But for the first few minutes, AIU officials were puzzled as they could not locate the gold by searching both his check-in and cabin baggage.
He was then subjected to thorough frisking using metal detectors. This led to the discovery of four cut pieces of a gold bar in his rectum. The gold was eventually removed from him and was found to be weighing 600 grams.
AIU assistant commissioner Vinod Kumar Pandey said that the market price of the seized gold is around Rs 15.80 lakh. Wadhaw however, was not arrested.
