Malda, 27 February: POLICE in Malda district have busted a major racket that deals in stolen mobile phones and have recovered as many as 753 such phones.

Seven persons involved in the racket have been arrested, while a laptop and a Mahindra Scorpion car being used by them have been seized.

The mobile phones that have been recovered include those manufactured by costly brands, and police said that the seized mobiles were worth about Rs 80 lakh.

According to Malda superintendent of police Arnab Ghosh, acting on a tip off, a team from Kaliachak police station raided a house at Sujapur yesterday evening and found the cache of used mobile phones that had been stolen from different places in Bengal and neighbouring Jharkhand.

The seven arrested are ~ Selim Haque (25), Didar Sheikh (30), Sadat Sheikh (24), Nasim Jehangir (24), Md Jehangir Ali (26), Nur Islam (24), and Asik Iqbal (19). Police say, they have been into procuring stolen mobile phones from Malda, Murshidabad, and neighbouring Jharkhand directly from gangs of mobile lifters.

After procurement, the mobile phone used to be brought to the house of one Rabbani Sheikh at Sujapur bazar. There, with the help of mobile mechanics, they unlocked the stolen phones and master reset them.

The phones then used to be sold to consumers through a chain of shops located at Sujapur, Kaliachak, Malda town, Behrampore etc at much lower rates then the brand new versions.

Police suspect that as many as 60-70 well established shops that deal in mobile handsets are involved in this. Probe is on to identify and book such shops.
