Kolkata, 18 August: HERE’s is a height of con that one may not have heard of in recent times not only in Bengal, but in India!
An agent of the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) in South 24-Parganas in West Bengal has been arrested for duping the LIC lakhs of rupees by submitting fake death certificate of his wife. His wife repeated the same con on LIC.
Interestingly, the accused agent Anamul Haq had fleeced LIC of Rs 3 lakh towards the death insurance of his wife, who is alive, without raising any suspension. But he came under the scanner after his wife Ruksana applied the same act fleecing money towards his life insurance.
Haq, was arrested by the police this Sunday on the basis of a written complaint filed by the branch manager of LIC’s Diamond Harbour branch. He was remanded to seven days police custody by a local court on Monday. The co-conspirator in the case, his wife Ruksana, is still on the run.
Haq (45) and his wife Ruksana (35) are native of Mograhaat in South 24-Parganas. He has been working as a LIC agent for years under Baruipur branch. It was there that he took three life policies for him and his wife.
On 14 August last year, Haq and his wife got all the three policies transferred to the Diamond Harbour branch. After this on 12 February this year, Haq submitted a death certificate of his wife to claim the insured amount against her two policies and got Rs 3-lakh.
A few days later, claiming that her husband is dead, Ruksana submitted his death certificate to the same branch claiming insurance money against Haq’s policy. She too managed to get around Rs 3 lakh.
Within a few days of this, another LIC agent spotted them at Diamond Harbour and alerted the branch manager of LIC’s Diamond Harbour branch. LIC soon undertook an internal inquiry and being doubly sure of the con, lodged a police complaint against Haq and his wife.
Diamond Harbour police subsequently raided Haq’s house and managed to nab him, but his wife gave the police a miss. During interrogation, Haq confessed to duping LIC.
The police are now looking for those who had prepared the fake death certificates of Haq and Ruksana. Sources, in the police added that some local doctors, panchayat head and residents who had signed their death records, were involved in the cheating.
