Siliguri: Forest officials in Jalpaiguri have confiscated an ambulance while wooden logs were being smuggled out in it.
Officials said that they received a tip-off yesterday night that woods will be smuggled by a car from Dooars to Jalpaiguri in the wee hours today.
Accordingly, a team led by Sanjay Dutta, the head forest task force at Jalpaiguri, took position near Goshala More at Jalpaiguri. At dawn, they spotted a Maruti Van turned ambulance passing through the area and signaled it to stop.
The driver of the ambulance instead pressed the accelerator and tried to speed away. The forest team chased and this made the driver and two “patients” flee by abandoning the ambulance in the middle of the road.
On opening the door of the ambulance, the forest team discovered that wooden logs were being smuggled by sliding them horizontally under the seat. They seized the ambulance and the wooden logs which are worth about Rs 2-lakh.
