Kolkata: One more school in Kolkata today turned into a battlefield over the allegation of sexual abuse of a child by a teacher.

This comes only four days since a non-teaching staff of a private convent school at Baguiati in the city was arrested over a similar charge.

In today’s case, the incident pertains to Binodini Girls High School, a government-aided institute at Dhakuria in south Kolkata. The allegation is that a primary section teacher of the school had sexually abused a five-year-old nursery girl on 26 September.

Since her mother was down with dengue, on recuperation she and her husband came to the school today morning and lodged a written complaint with the school principal. The news also spread to other guardians.

Peeved at this, a few hundred guardians burst into an aggressive agitation in front of the school and demanded that the accused teacher must be handed over to them for punishment. Some of the guardians even barged into the school and damaged the motorcycle of the accused teacher.

Sensing danger, the school authorities informed the police. Soon a team of cops from Lake police station reached the school and drove out the guardians. But this added fuel to the fire and more guardians and their neighbours joined in the agitation.

They got into a scuffle with police when the latter stopped them from breaking through the collapsible iron Gate into the school. Some policemen were even heckled.

At this point, the police resorted to an indiscriminate lathi-charge and one of the guardians, Mousumi Mondal, was left bleeding from the forehead.

Despite this, the pitched battle between the police and the guardians continued for hours. Other teachers of the school were also heckled by the agitators. The situation calmed down only after police arrested the accused teacher Deepak Karmakar, who hails from Naktala in south Kolkata.

Police have said that Karmakar has been booked for child abuse and the investigation will be carried out strict adherence to the law. As many as 10 policemen have been injured in the attack by the guardians. Four persons have been arrested for this so far.

  1. Creating an environment of trust and safety for our children should be the top priority now. Parents should be empowered and they should be very much involved to ensure safety of the school.
Our clients are empowered to conduct external audit to ensure safety of their data in offshore. Why cannot parents be allowed the same for the safety of their children in school?
