Kolkata, 25 September: A WAGE labourer has died and two are grievously injured in a crude bomb explosion at Cossipore in north Kolkata on Friday afternoon.
The explosion took place around 3 pm on the premises of a barge spare parts manufacturing unit of the Jindal group at Rushtamji Parsi Road in Cossipore.
The wage labourers were clearing weeds from the factory premises with the help of a handheld instrument when they hit a tin container hidden amidst shrubs. It went off instantly, injuring three of the five wage labourers who were engaged in the work.
Co-workers and the private security guards deployed at the factory rushed them to R G Kar Hospital in Belgachia, where one of them Sanjiv Das (43) was declared brought dead. He was a resident of Ghola in North 24-Parganas.
The two other injured labourers have been identified the deceased’s son Sagar Das (15) and Amrit Sarkar of same Ghola in North 24-Pargans. Of them, the condition of Sagar is critical; his right hand was blown off in the explosion. He has been relocated to the SSKM Hospital, which is better equipped to deal with such patients.
At the time of filing this report, the CID’s bomb disposal squad is on its way to the Cossipore factory to find if there were more crude bombs hidden in the premises. The police had seized a cache of crude bombs from here about two months ago.
Earlier on 15 September, a wage labourer was severely injured in a similar blast at a Bengal food department owned godown premises in the same Cossipore area.
