Diamond Harbour: Trinamool muscleman Arabul Islam has been arrested by police tonight after a rival political activist was shot dead this afternoon at Bhangar in South 24-Parganas allegedly by Islam and his followers.

This comes even as only two days are left for the Panchayat polls in Bengal and despite state police’s claim that there will be no violence during the election on 14 May.

The deceased has been identified as Hafizul Molla. He was an activist of the forum opposed to the setting up of a power station at Bhangar and has been associated with the agitation over this since last year.

The forum opposed to the power station has put up candidates against Trinamool for various Panchayat seats at Bhangar, Today afternoon the forum took out a rally in support of their candidates.

As the rally was passing through Bhangar’s Nutan Haat More, Trinamool cadres led by Islam launched an attack by firing bullets fire and lobbing grenades. A bullet hit Hafizul Molla in the chest and he was rushed to the hospital by co-activists only to be told that he is dead.

The anti-power station forum members broke into a protest over this and blocked the road at various places at Bhangar demanding the arrest of Islam at once. This made the cops from Kashipur police station to arrest Islam from his residence at Gazipur tonight. He will be produced in court tomorrow.
