Diamond Harbour / Kolkata: Trinamool muscleman Arabul Islam has been remanded in 10 days police custody. He was arrested last night after a rival political worker was shot at Bhangar in South 24-Parganas.

Islam was produced at Baruipur Sub-divisional Court today and the police prayed for his 14 days remand. But the judge sent him to 10 days police custody until 2 pm.

Police have booked him for murder, rioting, armed attack, and possessing illegal arms and weapons. This is even as Islam today claimed that he was innocent and was at Lake Town in Kolkata at the time of the crime.

Meanwhile, leaders of the CPI-M, Congress, and other political parties took out a rally in Kolkata to register their protest against the murder at Bhangar. The rally started from Moulali and concluded at Esplanade.

Left Front chairman Biman Bose, CPI-M state secretary Surjya Kanta Mishra, leaders Sujan Chakraborty, Rabin Deb, and Congress leader Arunava Ghosh were present in the rally along with a sizeable number of Congress and CPI-M workers.

Supporters of Independent contestants for the 14 May Panchayat polls had taken out a rally at Bhangar yesterday. During this, armed Trinamool cadres led by Arabul Islam allegedly opened a fire, killing a youth named Hafizul Molla on the spot.
