Kolkata, 29 September: SEVENTEEN Army men from the 51 Engineer Regiment have embarked on a cycle expedition from Kolkata to Nathu La via Sukna (Siliguri) to commemorate the golden jubilee of the Regiment.

The 51 Engineer Regiment was raised on 15 December 1965.

The expedition, flagged off from Kolkata on Monday by the chief engineer of Eastern Army Command at Fort William, will reach Sunka on 1 October. From there, it will take the team 20 days to complete the expedition.

The expedition team is comprised of one officer, one junior commissioned officer and 15 other ranks. During the 20-day peddling expedition through both plain and high altitude mountainous region, they will exhibit the spirit of adventure, camaraderie and leadership that the Engineer Regiment has proved time and again in the past 50 years.

This grueling exercise is also aimed at reaffirming the physical and mental robustness of the team members as they cycle uphill on rugged and mountainous terrain culminating at an altitude of 14,600 feet.
