Siliguri / Malda: Just as Kolkata is getting virtually fried by the scorching heat, several north Bengal district witnessed a heavy rainfall and storm on Monday afternoon through night killing at least one person and flattening several houses.

The thundershower and storm started in Siliguri, Kurseong, Jalpaiguri, and Cooch Behar districts late this afternoon bringing down the temperature by several notches. In Siliguri, the rain stopped after a while but in Jalpaiguri, it resumed in the evening after a small break.

Around 9 in the evening heavy rain and storm started in Malda town and its surroundings. This fell several trees and uprooted electric poles, pushing Malda into an abyss of darkness.

A woman named Anima Ghosh, who was travelling by an e-rickshaw towards Malda Rail Colony, died after a tree fell on the vehicle. The driver of the e-rickshaw managed to escape.

In Jalpaiguri district, the rain and storm have taken a heavy toll particularly at Nagrakata and Malbazar with several houses either been flattened or their tin roofs being blown away.  At Nagrakata, an uprooted tree came crashing on a car and two motorcycles.

According to the Alipore Weather Observation Centre in Kolkata, till 8.30 pm it has rained 38 mm in Jalpaiguri and 31 mm in Cooch Behar. There is forecast for more thundershowers on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a warning has been sounded for a squall in the wee hours on Tuesday in the districts of West Burdwan, Murshidabad, and Birbhum.
