The announcement came today as the twin-towns gradually limp back to normality following the near a week of rioting, vandalism, and arson.
“It has been decided to grant a compensation of Rs 2-lakh each to the family of those killed and Rs 10,000 each to the families affected by the riots,” Asansol Mayor Jitendra Tiwari told reporters today taking West Burdwan additional district magistrate Khursheed Ali Qadri by his side.
Tiwari said that a committee has been formed with councillor Amarnath Chatterjee in the lead to identify the eligible families from Asansol-Raniganj and furnish a list of beneficiaries at the earliest.
“We will transfer the monetary compensation to the bank accounts of the affected families within three days. As regards the exact number of deaths, we have approached the police for this,” the Mayor said.
On 25 March a riot broke out at Raniganj over an RSS-backed Ram Navami procession. Two days later, on 27 March, the riots spread to neighbouring Asansol over another Ram Navami rally.
