Asansol: THE vegetable market at Asansol in West Burdwan district today remained shut throughout the day following a strike by retail vegetable vendors.

Around 500-odd vegetable vendors took part in the strike making consumers return home with an empty shopping bag.

The one-day strike was convened in protest against wholesale traders getting into retailing vegetables directly to the consumers. Since the wholesalers offer comparatively lower rates, people of Asansol are growingly buying vegetables from them at affecting the livelihood of the retail vendors.

Farmers or their agents bring their produce to Asansol’s Bara Bazar daily morning and the wholesale traders buy it from them. The wholesalers then take the vegetables to their respective shops and sell to retailers from there.

According to the striking retail vendors, for the past three months or so, in deviation from the age-old practice, the wholesalers are selling vegetables directly to the consumers, right after procuring from the farmers. This has affected the livelihood of the retail vegetable vendors of Asansol.
