Siliguri / Kolkata, 23 September: ON A day when Siliguri Mayor Asok Bhattacharya was campaigning for the civic polls in Salt Lake in Kolkata, a sudden incessant downpour on Wednesday evening inundated several parts of Siliguri town.
Heart of the town like Bidhan Road, College Para, Venus More railway quarters, Mallaguri, Shaktigarh and even the Siliguri Municipal Corporation office have been trapped in knee deep water.
The rain water has also resulted in a flood-like situation at Dangipara off Hill Cart Road, Utpalnagar in Champasari and Ratanlal Basti in Mallaguri area.
Clogged drains have turned the situation worse in several parts of Siliguri that usually does not see water-logging.
Angry over the water-logging, a group of residents blocked the Siliguri-Jalpaiguri national highway at Shaktigarh late in the evening bringing traffic to a grinding halt on the arterial road. Police tried to persuade them to lift the blockade but they were demanding a visit by the Mayor.
The heavy rains that started a little after sunset on Wednesday continued for hours till late into the evening with intermittent relief. Water level in the Mahananda river that runs through Siliguri town and the Panchnoi river near Darjeeling More are swelling due to similar heavy rains upstream.
Most parts of Kolkata and the suburbs too witnessed heavy rains for about an hour on Wednesday evening. This caused the traffic to slow down on several city thoroughfares.
The Alipore Meteorological Centre in Kolkata has forecast more rains in the city and in north Bengal in the next 24-hours.
