Asansol: A month old baby has been found dead with her neck partially severed in a household at Ketugram in East Burdwan district.
It is suspected that the baby has been hacked to death by her mother following a feud with husband for giving birth to a girl. Police have registered a case of unnatural death and have sent the dead body for post-mortem.
The shocking incident has taken place at Arna village under Ketugram police station jurisdiction. The baby was born to wage labourer Afaz Sheikh and Rizia Bibi, who already have a nine-year-old son.
Sheikh used to work in a construction site in Mumbai and used to visit his family once or twice a year. Last month he came home as paddy cultivation related jobs become available in Bengal in the run-up to the monsoon.
A few days after Sheikh came, his wife gave birth to the baby girl. According to neighbours, a feud cropped up among the couple over the birth of the girl. This is more so because Sheikh suspected his wife of having an extra-marital affair.
Sheikh recently went to neighbouring Labhpur in Birbhum to work on the paddy field of a farmer. His mother, wife Rizia, son, and the baby girl were at home.
Early this morning, Rizia shouted out for help from the neighbours saying that her baby had fallen from the swing bed and got severely injured by a bonti (a traditional vegetable chopper) that was on the floor nearby.
The neighbours rushed in to find that the baby’s neck was partially severed from the right side and the floor of the room had turned red from the bleeding. The baby was already dead by them.
On being quizzed, Rizia claimed that she had gone to the washroom keeping the baby asleep in the swing bed. On her return, she found the baby lying in a pool of blood on the floor. Not convinced by her statement, the neighbours alerted the police. Cops came and sent the baby’s dead body for post-mortem.
Basudeb Sarkar, the inspector-in-charge of Ketugram police station, said that the bonti has been seized from the house by police and that they were probing the allegation that has been labelled against the 23-year-old mother.
