Malda, 22 June: A lady teacher of Balurghat College in South Dinajpur has been hospitalised after she attempted suicide over alleged mental torture by her colleagues.

The teacher concerned is Jyoti Kumari Sharma, who joined Balurghat College in December last year as an assistant professor of economics.

Sharma alleged that right from the beginning, her colleagues had been conspiring to deprive her from finding an accommodation in the staff quarters. They were subjecting her to “mental torture” and despite repeated complaints to the college authorities, they maintained a studied silence.

Finally, the college governing body met today to discuss the issue. But Sharma was allegedly insulted by other teachers and GB members in the meeting. Upset over this, she came out of the GB meeting in a huff and then attempted suicide by slitting her wrist on the road in front of the college.

The news instantly reached the college and the authorities in turn called up Balurghat police station. The cops came and took Sharma to the Balurghat District Hospital.

The teacher-in-charge of Balurghat College, Prasanta Kumar Dhai, denied that the lady teacher was being subjected to any sort of torture. “She seems to be suffering from a persecution mania. We are trying to solve the issue through dialogue and persuasion,” he said.
