Midnapore: A fish trader from Bangladesh today fled from the clutches of a kidnapper gang at Khejuri in East Midnapore district due to sheer presence of mind.
The trader, Shoaib Hussain, is now admitted to a primary health centre at Khejuri with injuries in his head and body that he suffered during the escape.
Police said that Hussain hails from Narayanganj in Bangladesh and used to live at Basirhat in North 24-Parganas in connection with his business. He was abducted by a gang of nine miscreants in the wee hours today and they were taking him towards Digha in a white sedan.
Mid-way into the abduction, Hussain noticed a police team patrolling near the Irinchi Bridge off Khejuri and applying his mind he jumped off the moving car. Seeing this, the patrolling team, which was from Marishda police station, stopped the sedan and found out that nine people in the car had actually abducted the Bangladeshi trader.
Police at once arrested the gang members and rushed an injured Hussain to hospital.
Police are yet to unravel the entire episode and are trying to find out whether the abduction was carried out for ransom or some business rivalry was behind this. The injured Bangladeshi trader is now out of danger.
