Kolkata / Asansol, 01 January: PROMINENT BJP leaders in West Bengal seem to be all geared up to take forward the new year on a fresh note!
While one of them called on the Bengal education minister and senior Trinamool leader Partha Chatterjee at the latter’s residence yesterday; another BJP leader today performed a song on the Trinamool Congress stage organised to mark its 18th foundation day.
BJP’s lone MLA in West Bengal, Samik Bhattacharya, called on education minister Partha Chatterjee at his Naktala residence in south Kolkata on Thursday, that is, on new year eve. The two had a meeting for about an hour.
Bhattacharya maintains that he went to meet Chatterjee to discuss about an issue relating to Basirhat South Assembly segment that he represents. Minister Chatterjee, who also happens to be the Trinamool Congress secretary general, declined a comment.
While that happened on the last day of the year, on the first day of 2016, Asansol BJP MP and Union junior urban development minister Babul Supriyo sprang another surprise.
Trinamool Congress this morning organised an event to celebrate its 18th foundation day in front of the Asansol Municipal Corporation and its Mayor Jitendra Tiwari was present on the dais along with other leaders.
Union minister Supriyo, who was passing by in a car, stopped by and hopped onto the Trinamool stage and wished everyone happy new year. Seizing the opportunity, Trinamool leader and Asansol Mayor Tiwari requested Supriyo to sing a Rabindra Sangeet.
Supriyo obliged the request but with a different song from a yesterday her Bengali hit: Aaamr Pujar Phul Bhalosaba Hoye Geche Sudhu Tumi Jeno Bhul Bhojo Na.
The BJP union minister later clarified to reporters that he hopped onto the Trinamool stage just to show courtesy and there was no politics in it. “Tiwari being the Asansol Mayor, and I being the Asansol MP, both have specified responsibility to develop Asansol. Cooperation between us is needed,” Supriyo said.
On his part, Tiwari said he has always been fond of Supriyo, the singer, and not the politician.
The twin move by Samik Bhattacharya and Babul Supriyo come amidst the on-going discord in the Bengal BJP over the non-inclusion of several known faces in the revamped state secretariat of the BJP.
Some of the leaders, who have been dropped from the secretariat such as, Ashok Sarkar and Ashim Sarkar, have already made an outburst on Facebook.
Ashok Sarkar’s timeline reads:
“Congratulation BJP state secretaries. Cpm, Tmc and Congress all are included. Hope for next Assembly election, we will be in Nabanno. Rupa managed CPM, Loket managed Tmc, Jayprokash managed Cong, and we will form first Bjp govt in west Bengal.”
