Kolkata: After a doctor, now a college student girl has been arrested for supplying narcotics to a prisoner in a Kolkata jail.
The latest incident has taken place at the Dum Dum Central Correctional Home where Sushmita Malakar had Tuesday afternoon gone to meet her boyfriend lodged in jail for a dacoity.
During the routine frisking, guards found a talcum container in her bag with 295-gram ganja inside. This she brought to supply to jailed boyfriend Bhagirath Sarkar, who is an addict.
Following this, the jail authorities called up Dum Dum police station and Susmita was arrested. Police said that the 21-year-old girl is a second-year Sanskrit honours student at Acharya Prafulla Chandra College at Madhyamgram. She lives with her parents at Nopara locality at Barasat in North 24-Parganas.
Ever since her boyfriend was arrested a few months ago in connection with a dacoity at Bijpur, she used to visit him twice a week at Dum Dum jail. Police said that to deceive the guards she used to change her looks every time and even used to come clad in a burqa.
During interrogation, police have claimed, she has even confessed to controlling the gang run by her boyfriend in his absence. The gang is involved in bike lifting, extortion, drugs peddling, and dacoity. Her duty of late was to pass on the instruction of her boyfriend to the gang and collect his share of the money after every successful operation.
Police today produced her at the Barrackpur Sub-divisional Court, which granted her bail. This is because going by law, a student found with less than 500 grams narcotics for the first time is entitled to bail.
Her father Sanjay Malakar has claimed that his daughter is innocent and has been framed into the crime by someone.
