Kolkata: Bengal government has announced an additional summer vacation for 10-days for the state government-run schools due to the scorching heat.
State education minister Partha Chatterjee made the announcement this evening that the schools will now remain closed from 20-30 June and reopen on 2 July. He has also urged the private schools in the state to follow the suit.
The move comes in view of the extreme heat and heat wave in Kolkata and south Bengal over the past one week. The weather office today issued a fresh warning saying that heat wave condition will prevail at least for the next two days.
An official notification on the extended summer vacation is likely to be issued tomorrow and only then, it will become clear whether the additional vacation will be applicable to north Bengal as well where the weather is pleasant amidst rains.
The schools had gone into a summer vacation on 24 May and reopened on 11 June.
