Siliguri: AN employee of Jalpaiguri Central Correctional Home was today caught red-handed while extorting a bribe from the family members of a jail inmate.

Accused Firoze Ali, a lower rank staff of the Correctional Home, has been detained by the Kotwali police station.

According to advocate Anindya Munshi, Ali had come to the Jalpaiguri District Court today to extort the bribe, when he was caught red-handed by a group of lawyers. Subsequently, the Bar Association lodged a complaint with police and handed him to the cops.

“A man named Mukanda Burman was arrested on 3 November for carrying out cane business without a valid licence and was sent to jail custody. It was then someone from the Jalpaiguri jail went to his residence and threatened that if the family does not pay a bribe of Rs 5,000, Burman will face physical torture in the jail.”

“Scared by this, his wife gave Rs 3,000 and promised to pay another Rs 2,000 later. I came to know about this after the family hired me to move Burman’s bail petition. Burman was granted bail yesterday and to sign the bail bonds, his family members came to the court today,” Mushi said.

“Knowing that once the release order is issued by the court, the jail authorities will not be able to extort any bribe, they sent Firoze to the court to collect the remaining Rs 2,000. As he was taking the money, we nabbed him,” the advocate added.
