Siliguri: A court in north Bengal has sentenced a middle-aged woman to a life term in jail for murdering her young daughter-in-law.
Additional judge Himadri Sankar Ghosh Hazra of Jalpaiguri District Court handed out the punishment to Reena Khatun on Friday. A resident of a village in Jalpaiguri Sadar block, she has also been slapped with Rs 10,000 fine.
The judge had found Khatun guilty of murder after holding a prolonged trial in which 16 witnesses were examined.
On 25 April 2009, young homemaker Rahena Begum was found dead in her house with severe burns. Following this, her parental family lodged a police complaint accusing mother-in-law Khatun of having set her on fire for a domestic feud.
Police arrested the mother-in-law after a preliminary investigation and then furnished a charge-sheet in court implicating her. On Friday, the judge announced the punishment almost a decade since the crime.
