Referendum on Presidency VC

Kolkata, 01 September: THE agitating students of Presidency University have decided to hold a referendum next week on the demand for resignation of vice-chancellor Anuradha Lohia.

The announcement came on Tuesday when the 9-member panel appointed by the VC on students’ demands submitted its report to her. The students alleged that the panel has bypassed almost all the demands on the pretext that they do not fall in the varsity’s purview. The students had held a civic convention in the campus on Monday.

CPM-TMC clash over bandh

Asansol, 01 September: TENSION is prevailing at Salanpur in Burwdan after supporters of the CPI-M and Trinamool Congress clashed on Tuesday evening. Trouble began after a CPI-M rally in support of Wednesday’s bandh was allegedly attacked by the TMC supporters.

Jute mill worker murdered

Hooghly, 01 September:  A worker of Badreshwar Jute Mill was hacked to death on Tuesday morning over an alleged old dispute. Raghunath Prasad Sahu (55) was attacked by Ranjit Das, when Sahu was returning home after his night shift. Local residents caught Das and after assaulting him, handed over to the police.

Rs 1.5 crore narcotics seized

Kolkata, 01 September: CID officials arrested a youth with banned narcotics worth about Rs 1.5 crore from Sealdah station on Tuesday morning. Rajkumar was arrested based on a tip off soon after he alighted from a suburban train.

Arrested with firearms

Bolpur, 01 September: POLICE found four illegal firearms and seven rounds of live bullets from two youths from Saithia area in Birbhum on Tuesday. They were arrested subsequently.

Bus accident kills one

Hooghly, 1 September: ONE person died and 25 were injured after the bus they were travelling in skipped off the road and fell on a road-side ditch. The accident took place on Tuesday at Bholagarh area.
