Bolpur / Kolkata: THE three-tier Panchayat polls in Bengal are likely to be held in August this year, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said.
Going by the last Panchayat general elections held in the state in 2013, it will be an on-time election.
In 2013, the Panchayat polls were held in July in five phases and the new elected members assumed office in August-September. West Bengal Panchayati Raj Act mandates that unless dissolved due to irregularities, newly elected Panchayat bodies will be in office for five years from the day of assuming charge.
“The Panchayat elections are likely to be held in August. Speed up the development works and complete all the pending projects before that,” the Chief Minister told Panchayat representatives of her party and the administrative officials during an administrative meeting at Bolpur today.
Sources in the West Bengal State Election Commission said that keeping in mind the
August deadline, the Commission has already started preparing the draft electoral roll and seat reservations.
