Asansol: POLICE have registered an FIR against Union minister and BJP’s Asansol Lok Sabha MP Babul Supriyo for violating section 144 CrPC and getting into a scuffle with policemen at Asansol today.
Supriyo has lodged a counter FIR against some policemen for allegedly hackling and misbehaving with him.
The FIR and counter-FIR come following the Union minister’s bid to visit relief camps where the communal riot affected people of Raniganj and Asansol have found shelter.
Supriyo was stopped by police at Asansol’s Chandmari area today when he was speaking to a group of people staying in relief camps even since the 25 March communal violence centring BJP’s Ram Navami procession.
On being stopped by police, the Union minister came out of his car and got into a scuffle with police. Despite this, police did not allow him to travel to anymore camps in violation of section 144. Supriyo made a retreat after making a high drama on the road for a while.
Police later registered a suo motu FIR against the Union minister over this. Countering this, he lodged an FIR at Asansol East police station accusing policemen of heckling and misbehaving with him.
In a related development, state BJP’s women cell president Locket Chatterjee was today stopped from visiting Asansol by police. Cops stopped Chatterjee as soon as she stepped out after visiting BJP worker Raju Singh, who is admitted to a hospital at Durgapur. Singh was injured in the communal strife at Raniganj.
Peeved at this, Chatterjee sat on the road at Durgapur with supporters. Police sent her back to Kolkata after about two hours.
