Kolkata: West Bengal State Election Commission (SEC) has extended the deadline for Panchayat polls nomination filing by a day.
According to a notification issued by the SEC this evening, the nomination can be filed until 3 pm tomorrow (10 April). Going by the original schedule, the nomination filing had ended at 3 pm today.
The move comes following numerous complaints that opposition party candidates were being stopped by miscreants, allegedly backed by the ruling Trinamool, from filing nomination papers. This resulted in a vast number of desiring opposition candidates failing to file the nominations by the deadline today.
In the notification issued to extend the deadline, the SEC has admitted that there have been instances wherein opposition candidates were obstructed from filing the nomination papers. It, however, has not named Trinamool.
The nominations can now be filed between 11 am to 3 pm tomorrow. The polls are slated in three phases from 1-5 May.
