Kolkata: State Election Commission (SEC) has announced an extended day for filing of nominations for the Panchayat elections in Bengal but it is yet to announce the revised dates for polling.
According to an order issued this evening by SEC secretary Nilanjan Sandilya, nominations can be filed from 11 am – 3 pm on 23 April, scrutiny will be carried out on 25 April, and the last day for withdrawal of nomination is 28 April.
The order was issued hours after the state election commissioner Amarendra Kumar Singh today held a meeting with the state government, and the recognised political parties to find out their views about nomination filing.
The move comes in view of the Calcutta High Court yesterday directing the SEC to announce a new date to allow such candidates file nominations, who could not do so by the original deadline of 9 April due to alleged Trinamool violence.
SEC, however, has not yet decided on the revised dates for voting. Commissioner Singh told the all-party meeting today that the new voting dates will be announced on 23 April in consultation with the state government. Earlier, the voting was to take place on 1, 3, and 5 May.
