Barasat, 15 September: A girl studying in the XII standard, who had married her boyfriend about three months ago, jumped from the terrace of her school in a bid to commit suicide.
The incident took place at Madhyamgram Girls High School in North 24-Parganas district today and the girl is now admitted to Barasat District Hospital with grievous injuries to her waist and legs.
Headmistress of the school, Sutapa Bhattacharya said that the girl had been mentally and physically unwell for some time now and was absent from school over the past one month.
“She recently resumed school after her parents came to us and claimed that she had recuperated. But today during the XII classes on the first floor, she somehow went to the terrace and jumped off the building,” Bhattacharya said.
The school authorities at once rushed her to Barasat District Hospital. Having witnessed the incident, some of the girls in the school complained of nausea and uneasiness, prompting the headmistress suspend all classes for the day.
Family sources said that going against their will, the girl had married her boyfriend from Madhyamgram’s Abdalpur on 24 June and then relocated to her in-laws house. But she was allegedly ill-treated there, making her develop mental and physical ailments.
This made her parents to bring her back and arrange for treatment. But as it is now clear, the girl has not been unable to come out of the trauma. Her parents have lodged a complaint against her in-laws at Madhyamgram police station.
