Matribhoomi Local to stay women-only

Kolkata, 20 August: THE Matribhoomi Local trains in Sealdah division will continue to ply as trains exclusively meant for women passengers, Railway minister Suresh Prabhu said in Kolkata on Thursday after meeting Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at Nabanna.

Several stations in North 24-Pargans had witnessed ugly clashes between women and male passengers on Monday and Wednesday after Eastern Railway threw open some coaches of the Matribhoomi Local trains for male passengers.

Salt Lake-Howrah Metro new deadline

Kolkata, 20 August: SALT LAKE-Howarh East West Metro line will miss the 2016 deadline and is now likely to be thrown open in 2018, Railway minister Suresh Prabhu said after meeting Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at Nabanna on Thursday.

The initial deadline for the Metro line was 2014, which was subsequently rescheduled to 2016 due to non-completion of work.

Woman arrested for Facebook post

Kolkata, 20 August: POLICE arrested a woman from Gariahat in Kolkata on Thursday on charges of indecent postings on Facebook. She was produced in a city court that remanded her to police custody. The cybercrime cell of Kolkata Police has been monitoring the posting on the woman’s social networking accounting following a complaint.

Arrest in Sabang College killing

Midnapore, 20 August: POLICE on Thursday arrested an activist of Congress’ Chhatra Parishad in connection with the killing of a fellow activist Krishnapada Jana at Sabang College in West Midnapore in early August. Poltu Ojha was arrested following a night-long interrogation and he was later remanded to six day police custody by a Midnapore court.

Congress had held a 12-hour Bengal bandh on 18 August alleging that Jana was murdered by Trinamool student wing members.

Doctor beaten up

Behrampore, 20 August: FAMILY members assaulted a doctor and vandalised the Matri Sadan Hospital at Behrampore on Thusrday after the doctor allegedly hurt a baby during a caesarean section delivery resulting in the new-born’s death.

Rape accused in police net

Balurghat, 20 August: THE prime accused in Dhireen Mahanta Public Charitable Society Home rape case, Dilip Mahanta has been arrested by the police. He was produced at the district court in South Dinajpur on Thursday that remanded him to police custody.

Mahanta was arrested from Panagarh in Burdwan after evading the police for 17 days. The rape incident came to light on 3 August, after teenage girls alleged that Mahanta, who was the owner of the Home, had raped them several times.

Heavy rain in Siliguri

Siliguri, 20 August: Siliguri witnessed heavy rains since midnight to mid-day on Thursday, resulting in water-logging at Shaktigarh, Bharatnagar and in some low-lying areas near Matigara. Weather experts have forecast more showers in north Bengal in next 24-48 hours.
