Hooghly, 1 June: BENGAL is set to get another university and a new medical college, both proposed to be set up in Hooghly district.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced the decision while addressing an administrative public meeting at Tarakeswar in the district today.
“I will set up a medical college at Tarakeswar and it will be named after late Prafulla Sen (a former Chief Minister of the state). Students of Hooghly has done very well in the secondary and higher secondary exams this year: to reward them, we will build a university in Hooghly,” she said.
Later in the afternoon at an administrative review meeting also held at Tarakeswar, the Chief Minister said that she would decide the location for the proposed university.
“I will not entertain any lobbying on this, I will myself pick up the site for the varsity, she said when Trinamool Serampore MP suggested that since Serampore College has completed 200 years, it should be upgraded as the proposed university.
The CM also announced Rs 5-crore fund to develop the infrastructure of famed Tarakeswar Temple. The money would be spent through to be set up Tarakeswar Development Board.
