Kolkata, 23 May: LT Gen Gurpal Singh Sangha has taken over as the General Officer Commanding of the Army’s Bengal Area today. He has succeeded Lt Gen Giri Raj Singh.

Lt Gen GS Sangha, who has been decorated with sena medal and vishisht seva medal, was commissioned in the Indian Army in 1981. Having held key command and staff appointments in the Army, he has vast operational experience.

Lt Gen Sangha has participated in anti-insurgency operations in Punjab as a Company commander and later in J&K as Commanding Officer, as well as Brigade Commander. He has also commanded a Mountain Division in Sikkim and has served as Indian Army’s liaison officer in the UK.

He was conferred vishisht seva medal for contribution in sports (shooting) and sena medal for successful anti-insurgency operations in J&K.
