Howrah, 12 September: FAILING to come to terms with the death of their only son eight months ago, an elderly couple has committed suicide in Howrah but before that they willed their savings of near Rs 20 lakh in favour of the Ramkrishna Mission and a local voluntary organisation.

The heart-rending incident took place at Jagacha in Howrah early on Saturday.

Neighbours said that post his voluntary retirement from the service as a railway engineer, Aloke Chatterjee (57) and his wife Sijata (49) used to stay with their only son Sabarna at the house that they owned.

On 31 December 2014, Sabarna (27) died in an accident in Odisha and ever since, the couple had sunk into depression. Neighbours occasionally consoled them, in the hope that they would recuperate gradually as time tends to heal almost all scars and pain.

But this did not hold true in case of the couple. Unable to come to terms with the loss of their only son even after the lapse of eight months, they committed suicide by hanging in their house in the wee hours on Saturday.

Police have found a will and a suicide note from the house that reads that they were ending their lives as they were unable to live without son Sabarna.

In the will, the couple has given away a major part of their Rs 20 lakh savings to the Ramkrishan Mission and the remaining part to a local voluntary organisation, stating that the money should be spent in welfare measures and to support the needy.
