Kolkata, 09 September: WHAT can be the easiest way to go to jail? Attack a policeman!
Yes, this is what a youth from Bihar gave his reason for having stabbed a policeman in Kolkata on Wednesday.
Muhammad Halim from Patna stabbed a police constable posted at Kolkata Police’s Central Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) office in New Market area after the latter confronted him for roaming openly with a knife. The incident took place around 2.15 pm on Wednesday.
The attacked constable, Tarun Kumar Dutta on duty at the DC office gate, spotted Halim moving suspiciously with a knife in his hand. The constable who originally belongs to the Jorasanko police station in north Kolkata, stopped the youth and asked him the reason for carrying the knife
Peeved at this, Halim stabbed Dutta in the stomach, making him fall on the road with profuse bleeding. Passers-by, who witnessed the broad day assault, caught the youth and took him to the New Market police station on S N Banerjee Road.
The injured constable was rushed to a private nursing home in Alipore by other policemen and is now undergoing treatment with grave injuries on the left of his stomach.
On being questioned by the police, Halim told them that he stabbed the constable for he knew it would be sure-shot way to go to jail. Police however, are not buying the statement on face value and have initiated a probe into his background.
The youth from Patna has told police that he had been staying in a rented house at Sodepur in North 24-Pargans for the past few months.
