Malda, 11 April: POLICE at Balurghat in South Dinajpur have arrested 15 BJP leaders for confining the district inspector of school in her office for nine hours
Those arrested include BJP South Dinajpur district president Subhendu Sarkar and district secretary Manas Sarkar. On being produced at Balurghat court today, the judge sent them to 10 days judicial custody.
BJP had taken out a rally from Balurghat stadium yesterday noon over alleged corruption in recent recruitment of primary teachers and demanding that the DI of school Suniti Sapui should be arrested for this.
Police stopped them midway and allowed a small delegation to go to the DI office to serve a memorandum. Instead of leaving the office after serving memorandum, the BJP delegation led Subhendu Sarkar stayed put there and forced DI Sapui to remain confined in her chamber.
This continued for about nine hours from 2 pm to 11 pm in the night, until the office felt ill. As police came to rescue her, the BJP leaders and workers tried to prevent them, resulting in a commotion. In the course of this, police carried out a lathi-charge and managed to take DI Sapui to Balurghat District Hospital, where she is still admitted.
Police also arrested 15 BJP leaders in the night itself charging them for illegal confinement and preventing government servant in performing official duty.
