Midnapore: A BJP leader has been killed and several others have been injured in the Junglemahal in an attack by miscreants allegedly backed by Trinamool.

The incident took place today morning at Bhamal village under Gopiballavpur police station in Jhargram. The deceased has been identified as Ramapad Bera, the BJP booth president at Bhamal village.

Bera was returning from his daughter’s house from a nearby village when a gang of miscreants hacked him with sharp weapons. People from nearby areas took him to Topsia Rural Hospital where Bera was declared dead on arrival.

As the news reached Bhamal village, BJP workers rose in protest and set out for Gopiballavpur police station to lodge an FIR. But they were allegedly stopped by a group of Trinamool cadres midway and this led to a clash.

In the course of this, acid was thrown on the BJP group. President of the local unit of BJP youth wing, Rajib Bera suffered burns in the attack. He has been hospitalised.

State BJP president Dilip Ghosh has alleged that the attack on the BJP workers took place in front of the police and yet the man in uniform did not care to stop the miscreants.

Ever since the BJP performed well in the Panchayat polls in Junglemahal earlier this year, clashes between saffron and Trinamool cadres have become a routine.
