Kolkata: BJP MP and Union minister Babul Supriyo has expressed support for tomorrow’s general strike in Bengal called by the Left Front.

According to him, the violence perpetrated by Trinamool in the nomination phase of Panchayat polls is so widespread that the issue is no longer about politics but is the question of Bengal’s image and integrity.

“It is immaterial which party has called the strike. Ask any apolitical common man in Bengal whether they are at home with such brazen display of muscle-power and contempt for democratic norms. The answer will be no. Hence, I am supporting tomorrow’s strike in my individual capacity,” Supriyo told reporters at the Kolkata airport today.

The Union minister said that Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee must not be under the illusion that people of Bengal will always listen to her diktat. “It is not that people will not the strike just because she is ordering so. People have their own conscience and justification.”

Left Front chairman Biman Bose said that as announced yesterday, the general strike will start at 6 in the morning and continue until 12 noon. “Calcutta High Court today issuing a stay order on the Panchayat poll process has reaffirmed that the strike call is valid,” he said.
