Kolkata: Chandni Chowk area in central Kolkata today 11 September witnessed a chaotic street-fight between BJP youth wing cadres and the police.

The street-fight has left one policeman and five BJP cadres with hospitable injuries.

Also, due to the chaos, traffic movement from Girish Park to Lenin Sarani Crossing on arterial Chittaranjan Avenue remained suspended for over two hours from 12.30 pm.

Alleging that power tariff in Kolkata is dearest in the country and then there is cheating during metre reading, BJP Yuva Morcha today called for a march to CESC headquarters Victoria House.

CESC, a private company, supplies power in Kolkata and some adjoining areas. Its headquarters Victoria House is located at Esplanade area at the junction of Central Avenue and Bentinck Street.

The BJP Yuva Morcha march to Victoria House started from BJP state office around 11.45 am and then moved along Chittaranjan Avenue.

BJP state general secretaries Sayantan Basu, Raju Banerjee, women wing president Lok Sabha MP Locket Chatterjee, and Yuva Morcha state president Debjit Sarkar were in the march.

Around 12.30 pm, the BJP rally reached near E Mall at Chandni Chowk area, which is about 200-metre from Victoria House. To avert trouble, police had put up barricades right across Chittaranjan Avenue at the point and asked the BJP cadres not to move any further.

Police advised the leaders to send a delegation of 10 members to submit a memorandum to Victoria House. The BJP cadres, however, did not agree to the proposal and tried to move ahead breaking the barricaders even as the leaders sat on the road.

To deter the cadres, police fired water cannon but failed to contain the violent crowd who by then started hurling brickbats at the police. It was then that the police fired teargas shells.

The teargas shells made the BJP cadres to take refuge in the by-lanes in and around Chandni Chowk. Intermittently, they went about hurling brickbats at the police. One such brickbat hit a policeman in the head.

At least five BJP cadres also suffered blunt injuries in the police action and one of them was bleeding from the head. Police sent the injured to hospital, while arrested a few more BJP cadres and sent them to Lalbazar.

BJP state general secretary Sayantan Basu has claimed that some 50-60 saffron cadres have been injured in police action on the rather “peaceful” agitation.
