Kolkata: BJP has called for a rally in Kolkata tomorrow “to expose the vote politics” that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has allegedly resorted to by commenting against the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam.
BJP is of the opinion that by taking a stand against the exclusion of 40-lakh odd people, most of whom are Bengalis, from the NRC, Banerjee is compromising on national security for narrow political gains.
The rally tomorrow is being organised under the banner of BJP Yuva Morcha and BJP Mahila Morcha. It is proposed to start from Deshapriya Park near Gariahat and will traverse up to Hazra Crossing, which is closer to the Chief Minister’s residence.
State BJP Mahila Morcha president Locket Chatterjee, state BJP Yuva Morcha general secretary Raju Banerjee, and state BJP leader Sayantan Basu are likely to lead the rally from the front.
Commenting on this, BJP national secretary Rahul Sinha said that the rally is to expose Mamata Banerjee’s political volte-face. “In 2005, she created a ruckus in the Parliament by claiming that hordes of Bangladeshi infiltrators have filled Bengal. Now, she is claiming that there are no Bangladeshis in the state,” he said.
Sinha also clarified BJP’s stand on the issue. “To us, the Bangladeshi Muslims who have entered Bengal are illegal immigrants. The Hindus, Christians, and Buddhists who have come to India due to persecution in Bangladesh are refugees. We will drive out the illegal immigrants from Bengal at any cost.
