Asansol: At least 10 BJP workers, including state unit general secretary Raju Banerjee and West Burdwan district president Laxam Ghorai, have been injured in a police lathi-charge in Durgapur on Friday.
This happened when BJP took out a protest rally from Durgapur’s Kumar Mangalam Park to A-zone police station demanding the arrest of one Saiful Islam, who is accused of killing BJP worker Sandip Ghosh of Kaksa over a week ago.
Police stopped the rally midway by putting up barricades on the road. But when BJP workers tried to force down the barricades, police resorted to a lathi-charge.
Banerjee and Ghorai, who were at the lead, were injured along with another eight BJP workers. Banerjee has suffered injuries in the head and arms.
BJP has claimed that their rally was peaceful but police unnecessary stopped it and carried out the lathi-charge without any provocation.
Police, on the other hand, said that the rally was taken out without permission and hence, they stopped it.
