Behrampore: A BJP worker has been shot dead at Beldanga in Murshidabad district when he was heading to a polling booth to cast his vote for the Panchayat election.
The deceased has been identified as Tapan Mondal (54), a resident of Sujapur village under Beldanga police station area.
His family members say that Mondal had stepped out of his home around noon and was heading to a nearby polling booth to exercise his franchise. A gang of armed miscreants, allegedly belonging to the Trinamool, blocked his way and asked him to go back home.
A defiant Mondal tried to move ahead to the polling booth ignoring the diktat. It was then that the miscreants shot him in the head from a close range. He died on the spot.
Hearing the gunshot, people from the vicinity stepped out of their homes. To avoid being nabbed by the people, the miscreants started lobbing crude bombs on the road and escaped from the area.
