Diamond Harbour: ONE person died and several were injured in a blast at a firecrackers manufacturing unit at Magrahat in South 24-Parganas district today.
The deceased has been identified as Mriganka Naskar (18). The injured, whose exact number is yet to be ascertained, have been admitted to Magrahat Rural Hospital and Diamond Harbour District Hospital.
Police said that the firecrackers manufacturing unit was functioning in a residential area at Magrahat’s Dhanpota village. It did not have a requisite licence from the fire service department. No safety measures were also in place.
The blast occurred accidentally when the workers were busy manufacturing new firecrackers.
Since there is no major festival due in the next few months where firecrackers will be in demand, a section of the villagers have expressed suspicion that crude bombs were actually being manufactured to be used for spreading violence in the upcoming gram panchayat polls.
Some of the leftover firecrackers confiscated by police resemble hand grenade, they said. Police, however, are maintaining that it was indeed a firecrackers unit albeit unauthorised.
