Malda, 05 May: RESIDENTS of some areas in Malda today realised that a bolt from the blue is not an adage, always!
As a scorching sun was almost frying the district, the residents in several villages under Ratua I and II blocks, and at a village under adjacent Manikchak block were taken aback by a sudden hailstorm today afternoon.
Hailstones weighing up to 150 grams came down on the villages like Baharal, Paranpur, Araidanga, Mirjatpur, and Nurpur around 3.30 this afternoon even as the sun was shining bright in the sky. Scared by the unusual scene, people out on the streets at once ran indoors for shelter.
The hailstorm continued for about 15 minutes and stopped suddenly the same way it had started. The day remained as sunny as it was before.
According to Pushpak Roy, the sub-divisional officer of Chanchal, the hailstorm has damaged the roofs of a large number of households at Ratua I and II blocks. This apart, mango orchards have been hit by the hails at Nurpur village.
The block development officers of the concerned areas have been asked to assess the damages and submit a report at the earliest, Roy said.
