Barasat: Binapani Thakur alias Boromaa, the head of Matua Mahasangha, is no more.

The nearly 100-year old woman head of the socio-religious sect breathed her last at SSKM Hospital in Kolkata this evening.

She was admitted to the hospital on 28 February due to aged related ailments, including pneumonia.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the hospital on hearing about Boromaa’s demise. She has assigned six of her Cabinet colleagues to oversee the arrangements for Boromaa’s last rites.

“Boromaa will be cremated tomorrow with full state honours and gun salutes,” Banerjee has informed in a tweet.

Matua Mahasangha is an organisation of Dalit Hindu Bengali immigrants from erstwhile East Pakistan (now Bangladesh.) Both BJP and the Trinamool have been competing to win its support for the coming Lok Sabha polls.

In fact, Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself visited Boromaa at Thakurnagar in North 24-Parganas last month.
