Midnapore: A bullet fired from the revolver of a colleague has claimed the life of a police officer at Kharagpur in West Midnapore district. Police are claiming that the bullet went off accidentally.
The incident took place at Kharagpur Town police station today morning and the deceased police officer has been identified as Uttam Kumar Dey. He was posted at the police station for nearly a year.
West Midnapore superintendent of police, Alok Rajoria said that around 10 this morning, three police officers ~ sub-inspector Rahul Pandey, sub-inspector Debashish Das, and sub-inspector Uttam Dey were in the police station.
“Sub-inspector Das was on duty and hence he took out his revolver from the arsenal. As he was putting the revolver in the holster attached to his belt, it slipped off and fell on the floor. Seeing this, S-I Dey bent down and picked it up. During this, the revolver suddenly went off and a bullet struck Dey below his chest,” Rajoria said.
The injured police officer was at once rushed to Kharagpur Rural Hospital, where he passed away as surgeons were taking him to the operation theatre.
The SP has maintained that it was purely an accident and that the police are in touch with the bereaved family. “We are with them in this hour of grief,” he said.
Questions, however, over are being raised as to how come an officer in the rank of a sub-inspector cannot handle a revolver properly. So much so, that an “accidental” firing has claimed his life.
