Kolkata, 14 September: BURST in a split air-conditioning machine resulted in a fire at the international departure concourse at NSCBI Airport in Kolkata this afternoon.
The fire made the authorities evacuate all passengers and personnel from the international security hold area and switch off the power supply. They then activated all emergency firefighting measures.
According to airport director Atul Dixit, the fire was noticed around 4.15 pm in a room housing the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) apparatus near international boarding gate no 12. The gate is located on the first floor of the terminal building.
“By the time fire alarm rang and door of the UPS room was opened, a gust of smoke came out and spread in the international security hold area,” Dixit said. He added that while the fire was doused within minutes using extinguishers, because of smoke and as a precautionary measure all passengers were evacuated from the international security hold area.
The airport staff then switched on smoke exhaust fans to drive out the smoke, and carried out a thorough inspection of the entire security hold area, air handling unit, and other utilities. On being sure that the fire had been doused completely and smoke was driven out, flight operations was resorted through the international departure level after about an hour.
Maintaining that no injuries was caused to anyone in the incident, Dixit said during the fire-fighting period international boarding operations were continued using remote gates accessed through other parts of the integrated terminal building that handles both domestic and international flight operations.
