Siliguri: A forest guard in north Bengal, who was fired at by his colleague, has succumbed to the injuries after battling in a hospital bed for six days.

Deceased Kartik Guha Roy was posted at South Raidak range of Buxa Tiger Reserve (BTR) in Alipurduar district.

Roy, along with other members of an armed forest guard team, had swung into an operation against suspected wildlife poachers on 11 December.

In the course of the operation, the forest guards were exchanging bullets with the poachers, who too were equipped with firearms.

Roy had taken a position at the front of the team and was somehow stricken by two bullets that one of his colleagues had shot from behind.

He was admitted to a private nursing home in Siliguri in a critical condition.

After battling for survival for the past six days, the middle-aged guard succumbed to the bullet injuries today.

The forest department has already instituted an internal probe into the incident and has taken the forest guard from duty whose bullets had hit Roy.
