Kolkata: Calcutta High Court has ordered shutting down a Bengali news portal for publishing a news item suggesting that BJP national secretary Rahul Sinha is set to join Trinamool.
Justice Rajasekhar Mantha today passed the order following a petition filed by Sinha in March this year. He has directed the Central government to shut down the news portal and also remove the concerned news from the Internet.
In his petition, Sinha had alleged that taking a cue from the courtesy visit to Trinamool MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay by him and BJP state unit leader Ritesh Tiwari on 9 November last year, news portal Biswabanglasangbad fabricated a news item stating that Sinha will join BJP soon.
Opposing this, Sinha filed a complaint at Jorasanko police station on 20 November and then lodged a complaint with the state nodal officer on information technology matters. But with no step taken against the portal, Sinha then moved the Calcutta HC.
The matter came up for hearing today and the judge ordered that the news portal should be shut down for publishing unfounded news.
The portal management has said that they were yet to receive the order and that they will challenge this in the division bench for the justice Mantha passed the order without hearing them. Suspended Trinamool MP Kunal Ghosh is associated with the portal.
