Kolkata: Two months since the Majerhat bridge collapse, one more injured person has died. With this, the death toll in the bridge collapse now stands at five.
Apart from being injured in the head, the latest victim was also suffering from a cancerous brain tumour. He was admitted to the state-run SSKM Hospital.
Ganesh Prasad (26) was a jute mill worker till early this year when the owner suddenly locked out the factory. With wife, a son, and parents to feed, Prasad started doing all sorts of manila jobs for survival.
On the fateful day of 4 September, he was crossing the Majerhat bridge in a bus when the bridge suddenly caved in. Prasad suffered injuries in the head.
Even as the doctors at SSKM Hospital were struggling to stop internal haemorrhage in his head, they stumbled upon another shocking discovery on 13 September. An MRI and biopsy revealed that Prasad has a malignant tumour in his brain.
After the diagnosis, it became tougher for the doctors. The internal haemorrhage turned out to be a hindrance in way of giving chemotherapy to Prasad for the malignant tumour. Hence, they had to fall back on administering medication alone.
But failing all the efforts of the doctors and snuffing out the thin ray of hope for his impoverished family, Prasad has now breathed its last.
