Kolkata: Noted environmentalist Subhas Dutta has filed a public interest litigation (PIL) in the Calcutta High Court against the adulteration of food items in Bengal and the state government’s failure to tackle the menace.
The move comes in view of the shocking revelation over the past one week that meat chopped out from carcasses in dumping grounds in and around Kolkata was being supplied to retailers and restaurants in the city by a racket.
The PIL has been filed in a division bench headed by Chief Justice Jyotirmoy Bhattacharya. he matter is likely to come up for a hearing next week.
“The carcass-meat episode has highlighted the fact that West Bengal has turned into a heaven for adulterated food. Despite this, the state is at the bottom in the country as regards the fight against adulterated food items. Since this an issue that concerns every one of us, I have filed the PIL today for some remedy,” Dutta said.
