Kolkata: CBI has arrested a lawyer of Calcutta High Court and a senior officer of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on charges of extortion.

The arrested lawyer is representing Trinamool leader and Kolkata deputy mayor Iqbal Ahmed in the Narada Scam in which several senior Trinamool leaders and ministers are accused of taking a bribe. The CBI is investigating the Scam.

Lawyer Daanish Haque and NCB officer Amarendra Kumar, however, have been arrested on the basis of a complaint by a businessman from central Kolkata.

The businessman, Pratap Aditya, approached the CBI complaining that Haque and Kumar were demanding Rs 2-lakh bribe from him, failing which they have threatened him arrest in a narcotics supply case. Along with his complaint, Aditya furnished the phone recordings of the conversations with the two.

CBI’ anti-corruption branch took up the case and advised Aditya to pay Rs 50,000 as the first installment. Accordingly, the businessman scheduled a meeting with Haque at the latter’s office at Park Circus yesterday night to make the payment.

As soon as he handed over the money to Haque, CBI officers in plain-cloth arrested the lawyer red-handed. After this, quizzing Haque, they arrested Kumar from his government quarter at Rajarhat.

CBI sources have informed that Haque and Kumar have been working as a pair for the past some time. They would mostly target drug addict youths belonging to affluent families of Kolkata and demand money from them with the threat of arrest in some narcotics-related case.

Mostly, Kumar used to threaten the targets, while Haque used to offer the settlement formula. The High Court lawyer also used to receive the bribe. CBI suspects that the duo has extorted a few crores of rupees in this fashion.

Incidentally, Haque’s arrest comes at a time when the CBI has expedited the investigations in the Saradha, Narada, and Rose Valley scams in which several Trinamool heavyweights are accused.
